Do you remember the first time when you were taught how to write? In kinder garden your teacher holding your hand and teaching you to trace the dotted lines of alphabets!
I learned to write in Junior Kg at St Aloysius where there was a decoration of chart papers across the walls showing the idealized script of alphabets written in uppercase and lowercase and we all were aiming at! Where every day we sat on the wooden desks struggling to sit straight and still feel relaxed and concentrate on the instructions one two, up down instead of wishing to play on the ground and make perfect ovals, upstrokes and downstrokes.
Then in the fifth grade we were graduated from using pencils to pens without making blots and blobs, striving to get the “star” or “neat work” from the teacher! And when the ink ran out you put a new refill into it as getting a new pen was not a very good thing to do. Then were introduced the scented pens in different …. If you hand me one now it would transport me back to my school desk where everybody gathered around desks or sitting on the floor making big charts and sign boards for Annual Functions or chart making competition…
I remember changing my writing every time to look cool – Where everybody was of the belief that good writing means good character.
But actually, I was just trying to find myself!!!
Handwriting comes from the subconscious mind. How?
Initially, when we first learn how to write, how to form letters, we think about the formation of letters – curves, ovals and loops. Then gradually the subconscious mind takes over and we just think about what to write not how to write. The brain sends a request to the arm, hand and fingers, where together they control the writing instrument. Thus, making writing the revealing representative a symbol of the mind behind the pen.
When was the last time you actually wrote something on a paper…? And grocery list or post it notes do not count!
Despite being taught the same standard letters in school, no two hand writings are ever the same! As per the research there is one in 68 trillion chances of two handwritings being alike.
Benjamin Franklin said, “Write which is worth reading else do something worth writing.”
Doctors are the prime customers for handwriting programs. Penmanship can actually save lives. Imagine yourself in an emergency room trying to figure out a prescription whether it is 7 or 9. You are dead!
I am aware that it’s not for everyone. There are some people who grind their teeth with the very idea saying, “give everybody computer, teach them. We already have so much to deal with. The kids are overburdened with their damn school work, leave them alone! They have enough problems! Illegible signatures are harder to forge! But still it is satisfying to think that there are some people who actually think that penmanship is important!
Advances in technology do not eliminate the need for teaching handwriting.
Teaching good penmanship brings out children’s intrinsic feeling of visual order and beauty.
Even if the calculator is invented you don’t stop teaching your kids to add or subtract.
You still feel very proud of your child winning a spelling bee contest even in the time of spell check.
On 1st January you make a resolution of maintaining a personal journal. How many of you actually shop for a diary and how many download the “Diary app”?! When it comes to actually writing, we all are slaves to keyboards and smart phones. You visit a café half of the people would be engrossed in their laptops. What happened to the concept – “A lot can happen over a coffee….”?
